Feast Of Fourth

In partner with Shop West 4th, Chowmenow, a site dedicated to finding restaurants with a under $5 lunch menu, kindly invited a couple of our UBC Food Society execs on a tour of Feast of Fourth, an event in Kits, to showcase some of the great cheap eats along West 4th Ave. The Feast on Fourth event (scroll down on this page) is still ongoing (until October 13th), so you still have a chance to check out the awesome deals the restaurants!

First Stop: Cafe Gypsy Rose
Gypsy Rose Cafe
This a crepe restaurant that makes a variety of sweet and savory crepes right before your eyes. They are a family run business, and use a crepe recipe that has been passed on for three generations! How cool is that?

This is the ham and cheese crepe, a savory crepe. A simple, essential savory crepe done well. The crepe itself is scrumptious, and they are quite generous with the innards.

The Nutella crepe, a classic, was my personal favourite. The crepes themselves are tasty, and they are not stingy with the Nutella. If you do not like sweets much, this would still be a good choice, as the ratio balances out nicely.
Cafe Gypsy Rose has great prices, too! You can get crepes for as low as $5.00. Definitely a spot worth checking out.

Second Stop: Tractor Everyday Healthy Foods

This is a restaurant that uses fresh and in season ingredients from mostly local sellers (especially the produce). They also make their dishes in small quantities every day, to ensure a fresh tasting meal and to avoid wasting food. Their menu is vegetarian friendly too. You can find many meat-free sandwiches and salads, as well as some vegan options.

This is one of their many salads. It is made with arugula, grilled pears, candied walnuts, blue cheese, and drizzled with a lemon champagne vinaigrette. This was probably my favourite salad (though it’s hard to decide). It was all very fresh as promised.
We were served a veggie sandwich made with kale, roasted crescendo peppers, grilled zucchini, tomatoes, asiago cheese, and a wonderful pesto aioli. They also carry very delicious chicken and ham sandwich.

Last but certainly not least are the gluten free pistachio double chocolate cookies. Pistachio and chocolate is a match made in heaven, and these cookies do not disappoint. Definitely a must buy if you stop by Tractor.

Tractor is also very affordable, especially for the fresh ingredients they use. You can get a half sandwich for $5, great for a quick lunch. And why not indulge in one of those cookies while you’re at it?

Third Stop: The Noodle Box

This is a great place to go if you have a hankering for some Southeast Asian comfort food. There are several locations around Vancouver and Victoria.

We had their Cambodian spring rolls (2 for $5), made with pork and served with a Vietnamese chili dipping sauce. They were nice and crispy on the outside and the sauce added a nice little kick.

Last Stop: Pepitas

Pepitas is a Mexican restaurant tucked away next to Chronic Tacos. The restaurant is filled with fun Mexican and Spanish style décor.

The most notable dish was the nachos, served with black beans, jack cheese, salsa, guacamole, salsa, and sour cream. The guacamole was the highlight for me here. If you stop by Pepitas, I would certainly recommend getting a taste of it. It is made with avocado, cilantro, tomato, onion, and chile. The chips are quite good too, although they got bit soggy in the nachos.

Feast of Fourth is a great chance to try some new restaurants not too far from UBC, so check it out! Special thanks to Chowmenow for this awesome opportunity to get a taste of some of the cheap eats around Vancouver! Check out their facebook for updates on cheap eats!
Happy eating!
