What do you associate the month of November with: Remembrance Day and red poppies, or do you change the ‘N’ to a ‘M’ for Movember? Movember is a month-long event that raises awareness about men’s health issues, including prostate cancer and depression. You know it’s Movember when at the start of the month, all your male friends are clean-shaven and baby-faced, and by the end, an assortment of stashes have sprung from their chins and lips.
To commemorate this charity event, I’ve found 3 moustache-inspiring-foodie-approved places to check out around Vancouver to help you get into that Movember spirit.
1. The Green Moustache Organic Juice + Live Food Bar
3607 W 4th Ave, Vancouver
It all started with the Richer family from Whistler who wanted to share organic and healthy foods with their friends and family. The Green Moustache is organic, local and very passionate about achieving optimum health with nutritious foods. Their entire menu is vegetarian, gluten-free and freshly made. They serve breakfast items, such as smoothie bowls or waffles, as well as soups and wraps. However, they are best known for their health-conscious beverages. Some examples of these beverages include Superfood Hot Chocolate (contains cacao powder, maple syrup, cinnamon, cayenne + cashew mylk), freshly squeezed or cold-pressed juices such as the Invigorating Dr. G’s Ultimate Green cold pressed juice (contains dark green leafy vegetables, romaine, red cabbage, bell pepper, Swiss chard and apple) to help cleanse, boost, and heal the body; and smoothies such as Einstein (contains strawberries, banana, vanilla bean, chia, maca, almond mylk or water kefir and honey). After having a sip of one of their drinks, you’ll know why they’re aptly named The Green Moustache, as you’ll have a foamy green moustache on top of your own lip! If you have more of a sweet tooth, you’ll be glad to know that they also serve desserts that are raw, gluten-free, and dairy-free! They only use super-food ingredients and use natural sugar sources such as dates, honey, or maple syrup. Feel like a healthier you with guilt-free desserts after a refreshing meal!
2. Café Medina Front of the Line Movember Fundraiser
780 Richards St, Vancouver
This popular breakfast and brunch spot is always sporting a long line regardless of the time (in part due to its no reservation policy). But this month, you’re in luck! You can reserve your table (and skip the line) throughout November by donation! 100% of the proceeds go towards the Movember Foundation. They have 3 time slots each day that you can book: 10am, 11:30am, and 1pm. Please note that tables can be booked for up to six people, and the minimum donation per table is $25. Enjoy that gooey egg yolk goodness paired with flavorful dishes baked in cast iron skillets while knowing you’ve just contributed to an amazing cause. Enjoy a nice hot cup of coffee with sweet, fluffy Belgian waffles for the full experience. Check out the event here for more details.
3. Mr. Moustache Bubble Tea
8079 Granville St, Vancouver
This bubble tea shop recently opened in the Marpole community and it’s serving drinks that you’ll crave once you’ve tasted it. Their featured drinks are their macchiatos and lattés. Some featured flavors include Peach Tea Macchiato and Rose Earl Grey Latte. The size that you get for the price is definitely worth it, and it comes with a cute, Instagram-able logo. The featured drinks come with a layer of cream that gently floats on top of the drink. It has a light texture and flavor that helps round it out. If macchiatos are not your calling, they also make milk teas, slushes, black and green teas, fresh milk teas, and sparkling teas. You can add pearls, green tea jelly, coconut jelly, agar, pudding, grass jelly and aloe vera for an extra fifty cents to any of the drinks. Don’t forget to ask about the points card that they have! It will definitely come in handy when you and your friends have those late-night bubble tea runs, as they’re open until midnight 7 days a week. Regardless of the status of your facial hair, you can rock a milky moustache with a Mr. Moustache drink just in time for Movember.
