On November 4, Comfort Food mini club held its very first event. We went to Burgoo because I thought it was only fitting since Burgoo is known for its comfort food. They have a very diverse menu, serving foods across the world from east to west and north to south. It is located on 3096 Main Street. We arrived there around 6:30 PM and the place was packed. We had to wait another 15 minutes to be seated because they were still setting up our table. So to kill time, we did a little introduction with everyone outside the restaurant. With everyone being so friendly, it did not take much time for everyone to become friends.
Once we seated, we immediately looked in the menu and started to decide what to get. Some people suggested to share all the food with everyone but from what I have heard, the portions tend to be smaller so it might be difficult to share. Thus, we ended up going the conventional way and ordered for individually. Some still decided to order together with their friends. The foods that we ordered include dos diablos, crab bisque, butter chicken with flatbread, jambalaya, mac and cheese, sunset corn and chicken, and cheese fondue. The food took a bit long to come out but when it did, it didn’t disappoint.
The bisque tasted great, the soup was rich and tasty, full of crab goodness. My only critique for the soup is that the crab meat that they used felt like canned crab rather than fresh crab meat. The jambalaya was good, the okra made the texture of the rice very soft and smooth. The small pieces of sausage and chicken gave a good bite which were perfect to counterbalance the texture of the okra. The butter chicken was exactly what you would expect from a butter chicken. With the first bite, you immediately get a burst of those fragrant spices and then immediately after the chicken and potato comes through. Along with their crispy flatbread, it definitely feels like you are eating in an Indian restaurant. I did not manage to taste all the food but according to my peers, they said that the food was great.
The ambiance was great, it was comfy and inviting. The service was fabulous, they have a friendly and knowledgable staff. Though I would advice those interested in trying Burgoo to arrive early. The place gets really packed during dinner time and it may take a while get seated. The food also took a bit long to come out. But overall I would recommend this place to try for people looking for some classic comfort food.
