On October 26, 2013, we had our first $15 or Less mini club meet up. Our taste buds travelled to the exotic lands of Thailand at Mango Thai on 1206 Davie Street (at Bute). We were among the first customers of the day, arriving there right at their opening time at 12pm.
The restaurant was cosy and well lit, with a funky and colourful logo to welcome us; the servers were very accommodating to our big group of eleven people.
Once we all settled at the table, we had a round of introductions and everybody instantaneously became friends! However, I don’t really recommend coming to this restaurant with a big group because it was difficult to chat with everyone as the tables were not round.
Most of us ordered Mango Thai’s $7.99 lunch specials (menu can be found here) where you can also choose the level of spiciness from level 1 (mild) to level 4 (rocket fuel).
Although I don’t know what “real” Pad Thai tastes like, I would say the one at Mango Thai is pretty darn good. The tenderly tossed Thai rice noodles had just the right amount of elasticity. The mix of flavours from the ground peanuts, bean sprouts, and shrimp made the dish even more mouth-watering. Unlike previous Pad Thai’s that I have tried, this one was not watery and as a lover of sweet dishes, this was a perfect match for my taste buds as the sweetness of the sauce did not overpower the flavours of the other ingredients.
And don’t even get me started on the Thai ice tea! It was totally different from what I expected in the most positive way. In my mind, I thought the drink would be your typical ice tea, little did I know that it was so thick, milky, and delicious. Its base is a strongly brewed black tea, sweetened with sugar and condensed milk. Before it is served, ice cubes are added and evaporated milk or coconut milk is poured over the tea to give it a creamy taste and a two layered effect.
The tasty food promptly arrived and in the end, we each ended up paying $10, including tip and tax! Unfortunately, mango is not in season, so we did not have a chance to try the highly acclaimed mango and sticky rice dessert. Good price, authentic food and friendly service. Why not gather a few people and give this delightful restaurant a try?
